Uhm... not sure what to say right now.
Okay, so I just talked to my grandma on the phone. First, let me say it is difficult with her. She is 86 years old, lives in a nursing home and has been kind of depressive since her husband died a couple of years ago. Plus, she is one of those old people who are generally disapproving of pretty much anything the younger generations in general and - more specifically - their families are up to. So yeah, it is hard to find something nice to talk about with her that she is interested in. But obviously one needs to take care of their family and so I always try.

Anyway, one of the things she IS still interested in is TV. Those cheesy ZDF flicks and series that a certain Timo Hübsch has been doing quite a lot (as Wikipedia told me), to be precise. Knowing that he used to be the male lead in "Wege zum Glück" not long ago and being very, very sure that said grandma does watch that shit, I mentioned him being in AWZ at the moment. Completely innocently. Casual conversation. Really. Just to have something to talk about.

Turns out those fangirl-genes seem to be inherited. Because my grandma is a total fangirl. *headdesks lots* She was all "OMG, I LOVE HIM, I'M SO GONNA WATCH THAT, WHEN DOES IT AIR?"
I AM NOT READY FOR THIS.

She does kind of know about my fandom activities. You know, that it's a gay storyline, that I enjoy watching it. I don't like to hold back about stuff I love and stuff that's important to me, so everyone knows. Kind of. And I don't think she thinks that it's awful that I watch it and I wouldn't consider her a homophobe or anything, but I don't think she gets it either.

And she is still a 86-year old lady with 86-year old values and OH NO, I AM SO NOT COMFORTABLE WITH MY GRANDMOTHER WATCHING MY SHOW. I CANNOT COPE, ALL I DO IS FLAIL HELPLESSLY. *continues headdesking*

Oh you poor thing! *hugs*
I'm so lucky that I hate everything my grandparents watch and they don't understand anything I watch

Thanks sweetie! It is totally awkward, though having thought about it I also find it a tiny little bit amusing. You know, for the few seconds I can stop cringing. But I do think you're lucky there. ;)

You know, right now I'm hoping she will just forget all about it. She does that sometimes. REALLY. *delusional*
But in case I ever hear another word about it, I'll have to share anyway. So you probably will.
*takes some popcorn**munches* Soz, but I need something to calm my nerves.

You know, while posting this I was thinking something along the lines of "Okay, everyone else will probably think this is hilarious." Glad to see I was right. :D

I can just picture her calling and wanting information and never noticing that I'm all "OMG, STOP EEEET, AWKWARD!" It would be so like her. *facepalming forever* AND I'LL HAVE TO SHARE THE PAIN AND ALL THE DETAILS TO GET OVER IT AND AFTERWARDS I'LL BE IN NEED OF YEARS OF EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE THERAPY AND SOME RANDOM PSYCHIATRIST WILL TELL ME I NEED TO WORK ON MY RELATIONSHIP TO MY MOTHER AND IT'S GONNA BE AWFUL AND AND AND... (Okay, fine, I might get a LITTLE carried away here. But just a bit.)

I'm so with Lilith! I'm in pain for you right now, but that's hilarious! Your grandmother's a Timo fangirl! I'd *facepalm* with my prantes watching Show, even though they'd be totally fine with it, theme-wise.

*headdesks with you through the giggles*

*hugs*

It is kind of funny when you think about it, but most of all it's extremely disturbing. Can we please go back to her bringing chocolate for my birthday, asking about school and my boyfriend if she must, being moderately interested and mostly disapproving of what I do in my free time and knowing close to nothing about Show? Because this is way out of my comfort zone.

DUDE, ANYTIME! I wish more people who come up and go "I wanted to ask you for a favour..." would just end their sentences with "... could you please go back and watch random AWZ clips for me?" That would make my life a lot better. :D

In this particular case... It's: "Spinnst du?" ;)

I hate to laugh at your pain, I really do, because I couldn't even fathom the amount of awkward I would experience if my grandmother watched Show but...LOL. You've got to let us know what her reaction is!

Oh *hugs* poor darling! Yes, I'm with you and would be mortified but if all your family know you watch and why this could be a good thing (albeit in a very OH-GOD-STRIKE-ME-DOWN-NOW kind of way).

One of the most memorable conversations with my Granny was when this traditional old woman, who was raised very religious, comes from a community that is still a bit backward IMO and OMG after her passing we discovered kept a half sister quiet because of the 'shame'...when this woman told me quite happily that she thought people should live together before marriage and how marriage its self wasn't all that important.

So grin and bear it sweetie, we'll all be here with sympathy, stifled giggles and popcorn and you don't know, the old gal might surprise you ;)

*hugs back* Thanks Schatz! I'll try and bear it with grace and dignity. :D

That's a cool anecdote about your granny by the way. Sometimes they can be surprising indeed. I thought my same grandma totally rocked when said nursing home tried to deny a lesbian couple one of the flats for two because "they're not married". (And who believes that was the reason? For srs.) I expected her to be completely indifferent about it but she was totally shocked and all "No way, they have lived together for half their lives. If my husband was still alive, I would want to move in together with him, as well. They can't deny them that." I was awestruck. They've got their moments, where they shine.

(Also, apropos of not-much-other-than-grandmothers-and-gayness-and-omgawkward, this randomly reminded me of when I told my grandmother I was dating a girl and she made a "meh" face and was like, "Oh well, we've all had a girlfriend when we were young, haven't we" and I'm failty sure I meant to reply "WHAT WHAT. WHAT. OMA. WHAT. WE HAVE?? DO GO ON!" but I was so stuck between annoyance at the "gaaaaaaah don't do the stupid IT'S A PHASE thing pls" and "OMG I AM INTRUGUED BUT ALSO TERRIFIED BECAUSE I CANNOT KNOW ABOUT MY GRANDMOTHER'S LOVE LIFE EVER EVEN IF PART OF IT INVOLVED GIRLS" so I think what came out at the end was more like "sjjaskjskas%@&^bhgaksia*&^&^*2klasjmal;salj" and I never did find out more.

My point being: Grandmothers+Slash=awesome-with-a-side-of-OMG-SO-WRONG-JUST-KEEP-BAKING-CAKES-PLS

hehe Aldi I know you never watched QAF US and I have no idea if it is in the British version, but when Lindsey and Melanie want to get married, Lindsy wants to wear her grandma's dress, and her homophobic parents won't let her.
So she sneaks into their house and steals a box with her grandma's stuff and discovers a bunch of love-letters her grandma sent to another woman when she was young :D

HAHAHAH, That's so cool! I seriously don't know how I would have reacted. Probably similarly incoherent, because WHAT? Interesting. But awkward. But in an interesting way.

(And I was totally thinking about the very same scene from QAF notoriouslyuniq mentioned before reading what she wrote. It might be my favourite QAF moment ever, it is my favourite Mel/Linds moment for sure. It's so sad and beautiful and made me cry the first time I saw it. /random)
